Mantras for meditation in the yoga tradition are gaining popularity nowadays with the ever increase in interest in yoga.  Mantras for meditation excite the center of emotion of the body and calm the mind.  It does not only produce an affect in the one chanting the mantra but also other people who hear the chanted mantras as well.

“Mantra” is a Sanskrit word “mantrana” which means “suggestion”.  The practice of mantras for meditation is giving suggestions to the mind.  While at the same time helping us get in touch with ourselves.

Mantras play a role in different religions and traditions. Mantras in the yogic tradition are uttered for many reasons including healing, purification, and spiritual enhancement.  Some mantras are offered to get closer to divine beings.  However, it is said that in the yoga tradition, you need to remember that mantras are to be coupled with faith.  You have to believe in what you are saying for it to have an effect in your life.

The beat cycle of mantras should also be taken into account when practicing meditation.  Increasing the speed of the cycle also increases the speed of your mind.  Chanting at a fast pace can easily exhaust the mind and body and as such is best performed when meditating in groups.

For individual meditation practices, it is best to say your mantra in a slower pace.  It slows down the mind and breathing pattern of the person.  In general, the best way to chant your mantras for meditation is at a medium-paced speed.  It makes the mind more awake and does not interrupt breathing patterns.

Mantras for meditation
in yoga deepen with consistant and regular practice.  Just like any other forms of meditation techniques, you have to routinely practice the art to master it.  Mantra meditation can really give you health benefits even just exercising for 5 to 15 minutes everyday – not much to reap the benefits of a mantra meditation practice.
